dylcol wrote:(Dylan) Covers That Surpass The Originals?
Arguments could be made (depending on one's politics & level of fandom) for :
Just Like A Woman - Richie Havens
Restless Farewell - Peter Blake & Norman Ostroushko
Clothes Line Saga - M & S Roche
Dusty Old Fairgrounds - Blue Ash
Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window - The Vacels
T. V. Talkin' Song - Heartland
etc.
....
Clothes Line Saga! Excellent choice. If any Dylan cover surpasses the original, it has to be that one. The Basement Tapes has always been one of my least favourite Dylan albums. And the organ is one of my least favourite musical instruments. I've just played Bob's version now to remember what it was like. But the version by the Roches, whoever they are, is sublime.
It's also nice to see Richie Havens held in high regard here. I grew up listening to Mixed Bag. That album has a beautiful and unique quality.
I don't really know the other covers you mention, but something tells me I should check them out.
