Dylan07 - Why?

I tried, but I just couldn't pull the trigger and buy the new Dylan collection.
I don't collect paper goods, postcards and such, so the extras with the deluxe edition didn't tempt me.
I just can't talk myself into buying all the same music yet again.
All they had to do was add a few rarities and I might have been enticed, I'm sure I'm not alone in that. How Sony/Columbia doesn't realize it is beyond me.
Maybe I'll pick it up used in a few months, for a fraction of the cost.

I agree completely with that. It's really a pity for people who have all the official discography of Bob Dylan to see a so beautiful package of discs and to refuse to acquire it because it does not bring anything new. It's my case. I had same temptation in the store. But I put back this very nice Deluxe edition on the rack with much of spite. Too much expensive for few innovation in addition.
Why they did not add unreleased songs - or alternate versions, etc.? There is so much in the career of this genius of the music. What a disappointment!
Fortunately there are other events of importance in its topicality: "The Other Side Of The Mirror: Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965" DVD, "I'm Not There" movie and its soundtrack are very fabulous news! The work of this man is definitely inexhaustible!
When next Bootleg Series?

All 3 on order (deluxe, standard, single disc edition).
Also on order the 3 Ronson remix UK singles (vinyl, 3 track, 2 track), of which I already have 3 different CD promos of :D

Make that 4 versions of Dylan on order.....just ordered the UK single disc version that comes with a bonus disc (Ronson remix).

Now, if Sony releases all of them next month with blue covers instead of red....I'll have to get them all, all over again

Even in my pre-cynic, I'll-buy-anything days, I wouldn't have bought all three (or four)! Although I did buy both regular & deluxe versions of Modern Times.
Do you open them all, or leave some of them sealed?

Did you get the "Discover Bob Dylan" EP? Has 5 (I think) regular album tracks. It's one of many in a new SonyBMG series of "Discover..." artist EPs. Besides the on-disc tracks, there's a code to download an additional track. Another hard to understand marketing trick. Don't have the tracklist handy, I passed on this item too. Don't know if it's available outside USA.

After 40+ years of Dylan record collecting, there is no Dylan (released) track that I don't have....most of them many times over.

My approach to Dylan record collecting is the same as that of a stamp or coin collector....all major types and any/all varieties/variations.....one of each.

I have no sealed records/CD's....I open them all. I do not collect for investment. I collect for the sheer love (obssession) of it.
I do keep all my records & CD's in plastic bags, so even jewel cases are protected. I do have all (released) Dylan tracks ripped as MP3's, to save wear & tear on the record/CD.

Packaging/inserts/postcards/obi's, etc. are very important to me, IF they are part of a record release.

Dylan postcards, photos, shirts, magazines, whatnot, that are not part of a record/CD, I have no interest in.

Don't have the "Discover" EP........yet.

There's one voice in me, sayin': Buy it! You're a completist of Dylan's official releases. (ego)
Another voice, sayin': Buy it! Deluxe! It's a nice package. You like that stuff. (id)
And the third voice, sayin': Fuck it! You already got all the music and that's the main thing. (super-ego)

Well....

But there's something else...
Would it be really better to have a new 3-cd-release with one or two unreleased songs? Those releases normally annoy me much more. It's kinda 'must have' because of a few songs but you have to pay so much for all the stuff you already own. The way they did it now gives us a fair chance to decide, don't you think?

Another way to look at it of course...
I would think that way if, for example, they reissued Biograph with 2 added tracks, that would be very annoying.
But in this case, being a new compilation, I almost bought it, so some extra rarities would have convinced me.
I think a "deluxe" edition should add more than postcards and a nicer box & booklet.

Well, that deluxe-thing extremely annoyed me in case of the Traveling Wilburys. I bought the normal edition for about 20,-€ here, but for the deluxe edition you got to pay around 100,-€ at the least in Germany (in the USofA the difference wasn't/isn't that big) just to get some postcards and a bigger booklet...that sucks!
I would have bought the deluxe edition for...let's say 40,- or maybe 50,-€ because I was already waiting for a reissue of the Wilburys' albums for years and I really love them. But fivefold the price? No way! That's a mess!
So on the one hand I'm kinda lucky that they didn't force me to buy the deluxe edition by adding one obscure studio outtake or something. On the other hand you're right, a parallel issued deluxe edition is something for the fans and should give them more of the main thing - the music.

Difficult to find a well-defined position...
